When Should My Child Start Nursery? 6 Signs It’s Time

Most parents have a hard time sending their children off to nursery. It is often a necessity if both parents need to work. Nursery, however, also gives children the opportunity to meet other children, and grow and develop in new ways.

But, after all, they are your children and you likely don’t want to see them leaving the nest so early. It is normal to be blinded as to when your child is ready to start nursery. You also don’t want to hold them back or doubt their abilities. Keep an eye out for these 6 common signs so you’ll be prepared for when the time comes.

1. The Typical Age

There are many opinions out there on when a child is ready to start nursery. Some are ready as young as 18 months. Some might need more time. Consider the age requirement set by the nurseries you are looking at. This can give you an idea of what ages they are comfortable handling. For example, here at Children’s Oasis, we take children from three months up to 4 years of age.

It is important not to get caught up in the “typical” ages children start. You can keep these estimates in mind, but at the end of the day, you know your child best. The other signs we mention will give you a better idea in determining if they are actually ready for nursery.

2. Dependence on Parents

Can your child handle not constantly being around you or your partner? Are they easily upset and hard to console when separated from you for a short period of time? Children who have been watched by others tend to have an easier time with separation.

If you are rarely away from your child, however, they might have a harder time breaking away from the co-dependence. You might want to start with less intensive programs (such as “Mommy & Me” classes) to work through separation issues.

3. Their Independence Level

Children who are not dependent on their parents often thrive in nursery programs. They can also be independent in other ways that show they are ready to be away from home.

Depending on the ages they cater to, some nurseries might require children to be potty-trained. It is a good sign that your child can do other tasks such as:

  • Washing their hands
  • Eating without assistance
  • Sleeping by themselves

4. Recreational and Educational Needs

Analyse your child’s development. Are the activities the nursery has appropriate for their interests? Children’s Oasis Nursery has a variety of programs intended to allow any child to feel comfortable and be engaged.

Your Child’s Stamina

Nurseries can be intensive. Good ones will make sure your children are consistently active and engaged. Can your child withstand a full or partial day program? It is not uncommon for children to get upset every once in a while. However, they shouldn’t be uncomfortable every day they go for the entire time.

5. Their Familiarity with Routine

Most nurseries have some sort of schedule in place. Snacks, lunch, playtime, and naps will typically be at the same time every day. This is done because children often feel most comfortable when they know what to expect.

If your child isn’t use to schedules, however, they might have a hard time adjusting to a nursery. Does your family follow a regular daily routine at home? You can start preparing your child by introducing and sticking to a regular schedule.

How to Choose the Right Nursery

Once again, you know your child best. Use these factors as a guideline to help you determine if they are ready for nursery.

If they not ready, don’t worry! Everyone develops at a different pace. With the right guidance, support, and patience, your child will be able to thrive in whatever nursery they attend.

We will always have extremely fond and treasured memories of our girls time at Children’s Oasis. The teachers are so creative and fun, always thinking of new ways to engage the children and the thoughtful and varied outdoor areas were always a favourite of theirs. We loved the intimate, friendly feel and all the little extras which makes it feel that you are part of a community. Thanks for everything, we really couldn’t have asked for a better start and we will miss you all.

From Paul and Katy Rogers (Dad & Mum)

What I love about Children's Oasis is how well looked after my children are and how comfortable they feel. They know the names of most of the staff and will always say 'hi' and often stop for a chat. It's a calm and nurturing environment.

From Zoi (Mum)

We love children’s Oasis Nursery. It has been a part of our lives for over 8 years with both our girls going there. The staff are all amazing and really care for the children.

Desde las maestras, hasta la directora y el ambiente de la escuela tuvimos una experiencia fenomenal y estamos entusiasmados de volver en Septiembre! Muchas gracias Children's Oasis!!!

From Adriana (Mum)

Both my boys were at Children Oasis from the time they were 2 and until they were 4 years old; first attending the Spanish Programme and then, FS1. Both classes were great! The teachers are incredibly professional and caring. The communication with the parents is excellent and reports are detailed. They make learning fun and engaging for the kids who learn through hands-on activities and play. The facilities are beautiful with lots of stimulating and educational books and toys.  I couldn't ask for more during those early years for my children!
