Understanding the power of routine

Have you ever been on a long holiday with a feeling of guilt because you actually miss routine? Well you don’t need to feel guilty anymore. We need a sense of routine in order to feel that we are succeeding in life.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” — Aristotle

We have to put into practice, with consistency, the things we know we should be doing.

If someone is struggling with self-help, it is most likely that they don’t fully understand that the quality of our daily routine determines our level of results in life.

Positive routines create a positive upward spiral

This is one of the many reasons why we at Children’s Oasis Nursery believe in the power of routine and the positive effects it can have in young children’s lives.

Consistent routines at nursery, activities that happen at about the same time and in about the same way each day, provide comfort and a sense of safety to young children. Whether it is time to play, time for a snack, a nap, or a loved one to return, knowing what will happen next gives babies and toddlers security and emotional stability. It helps them learn to trust that caring adults will provide what they need. When children feel this sense of trust and safety, they are free to do their “work”, which is to play, explore, and learn.

Routines are also effective in managing negative behaviour particularly when it comes to dealing with transitions. Routines allow children to emotionally prepare for changes that are to come.

Routines provide a context for learning to take place. Routines help children learn how their world is organized and what they need to do in order to interact successfully in that world.

Routines not only help children learn about their day, they can also help develop monitor skills as they begin to practice the tasks involved with the routine.

A child’s confidence level will also begin to increase as they become more and more successful at performing those tasks.

Routines can also provide opportunities for little children to slowly increase their responsibility and care of self.

In order for routines to be a practical source for learning you need to make sure that you have enough time to take each task within the routine slowly and you need to be sure that you discuss each individual task with your child. This also helps develop language. At Children’s Oasis Nursery we work patiently together to strengthen children’s confidence to do this.

At Children’s Oasis Nursery we always strive for that balance between routine and exploring freely. Learning through play should happen in a space that is carefully planned around routines. It is important for that space to feel organic and secure to all children. We also believe it is important that as educators we work very closely with our parents by effectively communicating all progress observed through our daily routines.

We will always have extremely fond and treasured memories of our girls time at Children’s Oasis. The teachers are so creative and fun, always thinking of new ways to engage the children and the thoughtful and varied outdoor areas were always a favourite of theirs. We loved the intimate, friendly feel and all the little extras which makes it feel that you are part of a community. Thanks for everything, we really couldn’t have asked for a better start and we will miss you all.

From Paul and Katy Rogers (Dad & Mum)

What I love about Children's Oasis is how well looked after my children are and how comfortable they feel. They know the names of most of the staff and will always say 'hi' and often stop for a chat. It's a calm and nurturing environment.

From Zoi (Mum)

We love children’s Oasis Nursery. It has been a part of our lives for over 8 years with both our girls going there. The staff are all amazing and really care for the children.

Desde las maestras, hasta la directora y el ambiente de la escuela tuvimos una experiencia fenomenal y estamos entusiasmados de volver en Septiembre! Muchas gracias Children's Oasis!!!

From Adriana (Mum)

Both my boys were at Children Oasis from the time they were 2 and until they were 4 years old; first attending the Spanish Programme and then, FS1. Both classes were great! The teachers are incredibly professional and caring. The communication with the parents is excellent and reports are detailed. They make learning fun and engaging for the kids who learn through hands-on activities and play. The facilities are beautiful with lots of stimulating and educational books and toys.  I couldn't ask for more during those early years for my children!
